GOOD NEWS ON THE CANCER FRONT
| There
has been significant progress made in cancer treatment over the past
decade. During the
1990s, death rates for eight of the top 10 cancers decreased or
remained flat, according to combined data of the National Cancer
Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the
American Cancer Society and the North American Association of
Central Cancer Registries. |
| |
| Cancer
death rates and cases decreased for prostate, lung and colon
cancers. Breast cancer cases increased slightly, due
in part to the fact that more women aged 50 to 74 are being
screened through mammograms for the disease, therefore more
tumors are being detected. Experts predict the
increased screenings will eventually result in a decline in
breast cancer cases. |
| |
| Early detection of cancer is the key to
a healthy outcome for patients.
Several advanced diagnostic technologies are used at Redlands
Community Hospital, including Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, MRI
(Magnetic Resonance Imaging), CAT Scan (Computed Axial Tomography),
Mammography, Ultrasound Imaging, PET (Positron Emission Tomography), and Nuclear Medicine. |
| |
| Our Radiation Oncology Center, under
the medical direction of Dr. Wyman Lee, provides precise external
beam radiation treatment for a variety of cancerous conditions. |
| |
| Redlands Community Hospital also offers another treatment
option specific to prostate cancer.
This radiation treatment, called Brachytherapy, works internally through the use of
radioactive “seed” implants. |
