Multiple Births are becoming more frequent
at Redlands Community Hospital

REDLANDS, CA  -  All babies born at Redlands Community Hospital are special, but during the past year, the hospital has seen an increase in multiple births. For example, in August 2005 a special kind of baby boom occurred. Five sets of twins and one set of triplets were born over a one week time period.

A set of fraternal twins was born August 6, while a set of identical twins entered the world on August 10. One set of twins was delivered August 12 and two sets of twins arrived the next day. Soon after, a woman  gave birth to triplets.

Bob and Kristy Turzer are the proud parents of the two identical twin boys born on August 10.  "When we heard about the other families and the number of twins being born, we were shocked," said the Turzers. "The entire thing is truly amazing."

By January 2006, the hospital had already seen its first set of triplets arrive for the year.

According to the All National Center for Health Statistics and from the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Club (NOMOTC), the number of twin births has more than doubled since the early 1970s. Today, about one of every 35 births in the United States are twins. Even more significant is the number of triplet and higher multiple births which has increased 200 percent over the last three decades.

"We usually see a lot of twins, but not all at once," said Pam Erickson, Director of Maternal Child Health Services. "Being a parent of fraternal twins, it’s exciting to see others experiencing the same anticipation."
