Computed
Tomography (CT Scan)
First
used in the early 1970s, CT has experienced a great expansion in its
use. This radiology method was formerly known as "Computed Axial
Tomography" and is where the term "CAT Scan" came from. The
first CT scanner took around five minutes to obtain one
"slice" of anatomy. Now, it can be done in about one
second. Similar to the MRI, Computed Tomography can be used on
any body part and is often used to diagnose internal bleeding,
tumors, and masses. It is an excellent method for imaging body
organs and the vascular system. Many CT Scans are taken with the aid
of a contrast agent that is either consumed or injected into the body.
