Vascular Health and You
What is vascular disease?
Any condition affecting your circulatory system is called a vascular disease. Routine exams and diagnostic tests are recommended by vascular surgeons because early detection is important for effective treatment.
What kinds of vascular
disease are there?
Atherosclerosis: Hardening and narrowing
of the arteries evolves over time. It is caused
by the build-up of cholesterol and fatty
deposits (plaque) on the inside of your
artery walls.
Aneurysms: Bulge in the wall of a blood
vessel. Although they can occur anywhere,
they most often are found in the aorta
causing an aortic aneurysm.
Renal Kidney Artery Disease: Atherosclerosis of the arteries that supply
blood to your kidneys.
Blood Clotting Disorders: Conditions
that cause your blood to form clots in
your veins or arteries.
Peripheral Venous Disease: Damage to
valves in veins causes them not to close.
Varicose Veins: Damaged valves within
your veins cause veins to bulge, become
discolored and they can be seen beneath
your skin.
Pulmonary Embolism: Blood clot that
breaks loose and travels to your lungs.
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD):
Peripheral arteries are the blood vessels
outside your heart. When they become
blocked by atherosclerosis the blood flow
is reduced or slowed down causing
inadequate flow of blood to the rest of
your body.
