Redlands Community Hospital Expert Explains Benefits

REDLANDS, Calif. – When someone hears the word ‘hospice’—the term ‘end of life’ care comes to mind. Accessing hospice services for a loved one can be a difficult decision for anyone.

“Because hospice care emphasizes making the patient comfortable during his or her last few months of life instead of intensive medical treatment, many view hospice care as an appealing alternative,” says Dr. Regan Douty, of Redlands Community Hospital. “Those who have chosen hospice care for their family members have had positive results. In some cases, patients’ conditions have improved and have lived long past their expected date. We treat people, not the disease”.

The Hospice team wants to remind families that their role is not to extend the patient’s life, but rather to provide both the patient and family with comfort and support during a very difficult and sensitive time. An exceptional hospice staff composed of physicians, therapists, nurses, social workers, spiritual coordinators, volunteers, and bereavement coordinators are devoted to ensuring the best quality of life for the sick patient. Each team member is focused on the patient and not the illness.

Hospice care provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms. The hospice team helps the patient achieve physical and emotional comfort so they can concentrate on living life as fully as possible. Hospice care services even continue after the patient’s death with some of the same staff members providing support and guidance to the family through the grieving process.

Many people unfortunately associate hospice care only with sorrow. However, many people’s experiences include times of tranquility, joy, and great spiritual growth for both the patient and family. Hospice care allows the individual and family to experience the final stages of life together says Gerry Smith, director of Home Health and Hospice Services at Redlands Community Hospital.
