Medicare Awards Redlands Community Hospital 4-Star Rating

Redlands Community Hospital was awarded a 4-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) hospital rating system.

The CMS star ratings on Hospital Compare, the agency’s public information website, makes it easier for consumers to choose a hospital and understand the quality of care it provides. Hospital Compare star ratings relate to patients’ experience of care at more than 3,000 Medicare-certified acute care hospitals. In grading hospitals on their overall quality, CMS used 100 measures, such hospital-acquired infection rates or emergency room wait times that had already been posted to the Hospital Compare site. It grouped those measures into broader categories, then attributes weighted value to each measure.

The Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating is designed to help individuals, their family members, and caregivers compare hospitals in an easy and understandable way. During the past decade, CMS has published information about the quality of care across the five different health care settings that most families encounter. The new Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating summarizes data from existing quality measures publicly reported on Hospital Compare into a single star rating for each hospital, making it easier for consumers to compare hospitals and interpret complex quality information.

The CMS Hospital Quality Star Rating ranges from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). Only about one-third of hospitals in the nation attain four and five-Star Ratings.
