Redlands Community Hospital Achieves Three Maternal Awards from the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative

REDLANDS, CA. – June 16, 2023 – Redlands Community Hospital has achieved three 2023 California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) Quality and Engagement Awards for its low volume of cesarean births for low-risk first-time mothers, ongoing training, and high-quality data reporting.

CMQCC is a nationally recognized maternal quality improvement organization that focuses on improving hospital-based maternity care in California. The CMQCC Awards recognize California member hospitals for going above and beyond to provide high quality care to mothers, birthing people, and their families.

Redlands Community Hospital achieved the following CMQCC Awards:

  • The Quality and Sustainability Awards: QI Academy Collaborative Hospitals, which recognizes hospitals that met and have maintained their target rate for their selected quality initiative: NTSV Cesarian Birth.
  • The Quality and Sustainability Awards: NTSV Cesarean Birth Rate, which recognize hospitals’ quality and sustainability efforts to reduce low-risk cesarean birth among first-time pregnant women for three consecutive years 2020-2022.
  • The Maternal Data Center (MDC) Superstar Awards: Medium Birth Volume, which recognizes hospitals who deliver 1,000-2,400 annual births that exhibited high levels of engagement in the MDC.

“Historically, Redlands Community Hospital has played a positive role in providing high quality maternity care,” said Redlands Community Hospital President and CEO Jim Holmes. “I believe that quality reporting data is important for families to make informed decisions about their health care needs. We’re proud of our team’s commitment to excellence in achieving the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative awards.”

Every year approximately 420,000 babies are born in California, and childbirth is the number one reason for hospitalization in the state and the nation. For mothers, overuse of cesarean births (C-Sections) can result in higher rates of complications like hemorrhage, transfusions, infection, and blood clots. The surgery also brings risks for babies, including higher rates of infection, respiratory complications, neonatal intensive care unit stays, and lower breastfeeding rates.

Redlands Community Hospital is one of 218 CMQCC member hospitals, accounting for 99% of California’s delivery volume. CMQCC member hospitals have priority access to all evidence-based best-practice tools, education, and clinical guidance. Among this set of tools is the MDC – a web application that provides near-real-time benchmarking data, quality metrics and performance reports for hospital personnel.

CMQCC works collaboratively with stakeholders across the state to identify the key causes of maternal mortality and morbidity and, most importantly, develops tools to help hospitals improve maternal patient safety. Through ongoing efforts and partnerships, CMQCC has played an important role in the decrease of California’s overall maternal mortality rates.
