How to Prepare for Your Visit

As visits to the Emergency Department are not planned, here are the things you should bring with you to facilitate care.

  • Photo ID
  • Insurance card
  • List of allergies, current medications, and their dosages
  • Recent labs or medical information related to your visit

What to Expect During Your ED Visit

Triage Process

After registration, you will be seen in order of the severity of your symptoms, determined through a rapid assessment by a registered nurse. He/she will ask questions about your medical history and the reason for your visit. Finally, you’ll be placed in the appropriate area and receive care according to that plan.

Treatments

Once you are seen by a provider you will be provided with a CARE card that details your treatment plan. Various labs, diagnostic tests, or medications may be ordered. Wait times will vary based on which tests or treatments are ordered, with CARE cards being updated throughout your visit to keep you informed of your treatment progress.

Please ask a staff member before eating or drinking as it could affect the tests or subsequent procedures.

Disposition

When test results are in, the provider will use them to determine whether you should be discharged, admitted, or transferred to a higher level of care. If your condition requires admission, you will remain and be cared for in the Emergency Department until a room is available in the appropriate unit.

Our nurses collaborate with paramedics to assess incoming patients, prepare for their arrival, and ensure they receive the immediate care they require.
